Fall/Winter I-League 2007
Game 7: Komets vs. Stickmen
12/08/2007
Euless, Texas – Dr. Pepper Star Center

This Game:
It was bound to be a game to remember, as the Komets faced the 1-5-0 Stickmen. The Stickmen have the roughest Penalty Minute Makers in the league, with well over 20 total minutes in the sin bin. David Blubaugh (the Stickman Goalie) was not one to disappoint, pushing his total penalty minutes this session to 18 by adding a pair of Roughing Minors this game. I don’t know what our resident antagonist Sean Kier said to get him out of his net like that, but it must have been about his momma.

The Komets opened up the scoring in the 1st period within 5 minutes of the opening face-off with a Sean Kier goal. He scored off of backhand shot by Wil Dobson which rebound to the left of the goalie where Kier slapped at it until it found its way home. Gerald Cappers got the 2nd assist on that goal. After putting the Komets on the scoreboard, Kier slipped unnoticed to retrieve the puck and present it to the Janis Family in honor of their newborn son who was laid to rest earlier in the day. Since no one actually saw him pocket the puck, there was almost a delay-of-game penalty because the refs spent so long looking for the puck.  Olsen was quoted as saying “You got to tell us this stuff! (Ok fine) No Goal!!!”

The Dobson, Kier and Cappers line (AKA: the Grind-Line) continued their press into the Stickmen Defensive Zone with two more goals in the 2nd period.

The second goal of the night was an unassisted goal by Wil Dobson (#80) from a severe angle, redirecting off of the backside of the by-then seething Blubaugh. The joyous celebrations for the goal were soon flustered by an altercation behind the net involving Kier and two brutish Stickmen. The Komets would then enjoy a 5 on 3 power play for the next “Long Time” as described by Senior Referee Olsen.

The third goal of the night was a power play goal by Dobson, who lifted the puck up over a pile of humanity (Cappers and Blubaugh) in the crease. Kier assisted on the play.

I completely credit my 3 points this game to the work ethic of my line. Kier and Cappers were tenacious and didn't give up. They had no problem digging in and parking themselves in front of the net and taking some abuse for the team. Way to go guys!

This game saw Jon Ellis in the Komets net aided by the Komets defense, featuring a new defense(wo)man Mel “Super Girl” Knourek. Some of the most notable plays of the night were by the defenseman Alex Atkins, who made some incredible poke-checks while racing down the net-charging Stickmen.

Upcoming Games:
Next week the Komets pit themselves against the Brewzers whose scoring strengths are embodied in forward Matthew Walker (#5). The Brewzers team record this season indicates that this game will evenly matched, having the same 3-3-1 record this Winter Season as the Komets do.

The Komets will be throwing their own scoring phenomenon Sean “Slip-n-Slide” Kier into the mix, and oh what a mix-up it will be! Sean has 6 points, leading the Komets team stats, winning half of those in point in goals. “Slip-n-
